Easy Tai-Chi especially made for beginners
Tai-Chi program that’s easy to follow; with classes composed of elderly peoplTai chi is a system of slow, deliberate movements from China. Tai chi can improve balance and help us to stay limber and stress-free as we age.
“Tai chi involves making very slow hand and arm movements,” says Timothy Hain, M.D., associate professor of neurology and otolaryngology in Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago. “It’s about controlling what you’re doing.”
Tai chi may prevent arthritis. “Because you move the whole body, including wrists, knees and other joints, tai chi keeps the joints lubricated. It is a smooth and relaxed form of exercise, very soft like a continuous dance.” In addition, Hain has studied tai chi as a treatment for balance problems caused by inner ear disorders.
“Tai chi offers so many different ways to improve balance,” he says. “There are movements that strengthen the legs. It’s also a controlled way to explore your center of gravity.”
Tai chi also boosts concentration, and it can reduce stress and lower blood pressure, says Tingsen Xu, Ph.D., a tai chi “grand master” who began practicing tai chi in his native China at age 15. Now in his 70s, he is an associate professor in the neurology department at Atlanta’s Emory University Medical School.
“I call it meditation in motion. You erase everything from your mind, concentrate on movement. It is very much a mind-body connection. Fifteen to 20 minutes of tai chi every day can reduce that stress.”
